THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism is administered each Sunday morning, by prior arrangement with the parish priest, after the 10.00am Mass.

It is the custom at St. Mary’s that families are baptised individually. An exception however is when related families wish to have their children baptised together.

Parents who live outside St. Mary's parish boundaries and wish to have their children baptised at St. Mary's should first obtain the permission of their own parish priest who has the prime responsibility for the spiritual care of his parishioners.

Before inviting family or friends to your child’s baptism please contact the parish priest or parish secretary to confirm the date. Birth and Godparent details must be given to the parish priest or parish secretary prior to the baptism.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE

Marriage ceremonies in St. Mary’s Parish follow the Rite of Marriage approved for use in Australia by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship and issued by authority of the Australian Episcopal Conference.

Couples wishing to marry at St. Mary’s Seymour should make an appointment with the parish priest or speak with the parish secretary, at least six to twelve months prior to the wedding, to discuss the availability of the church, dates and timings before making a booking for the reception venue, in order to avoid embarrassment or disappointment. Please remember that the wedding ceremony precedes the reception festivities.

Essential documents that will need to be obtained are:

Full Schedule of your Birth Certificate

  • A copy of your Baptism Certificate (dated within the past 6 months)

A brochure, Marriage in St. Mary’s Parish Seymour, will be given and explained to the couple during their first interview with the parish priest.

THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION

When did Jesus institute this sacrament?
After Jesus had risen from the dead on the evening of Easter when he showed himself to his apostles and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
(John 20:22-23)

Since the new life of grace received in Baptism does not abolish the weakness of human nature nor the inclination to sin, Christ instituted this sacrament for the conversion of the baptised who have been separated from him by sin. (CCC1425-1426,1484)

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is available without prior appointment at the following times:

Other times are following Benediction on the first Friday of the month at 7.00pm; or by a pre-arranged call to the presbytery.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

The compassion of Jesus toward the sick and his many healings of the infirm were a clear sign that with him had come the Kingdom of God and therefore victory over sin, over suffering and over death. By his own passion and death he gave new meaning to our suffering which, when united to his own, can become a means of purification and of salvation for us and for others. (CCC1506-1513,1526-1527)

Who can receive the sacrament and anointing of the sick?
Any member of the faithful can receive the sacrament as soon as he or she begins to be in danger of death because of sickness or old age.(CCC 1514-1515;1528-1529)

At St. Mary’s the Mass of the Sacrament of the Sick is celebrated on the first Thursday of every month at 10.00am. Following Mass home visits are made to Barrabill House, Karingal Hostel, Seymour Hospital  and private homes by prior arrangement.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist take Holy Communion to patients at Seymour Hospital, Barrabill House, residents of Karingal Hostel, and private homes each week.
